Feminine Underpinnings

As a firm rule, a lady always wears proper underpinnings. She does not wear skirts and dresses in public without a slip and stockings underneath.

A slip can be a lady's best friend as it serves several good purposes:
  • Helps a skirt or dress to drape properly
  • Protects the skin from chafing against the fabric of the garment
  • Prevents the garment from clinging to the body
  • Prevents the silhouetting of a lady's legs in the sunlight *
  • Prevents show through of intimate undergarments
Likewise, stockings have their benefits:
  • Give a polished, well-groomed appearance
  • Hide physical flaws such as bruises and scars (I once heard stockings described as foundation makeup for the legs)
  • Make shoes more comfortable by reducing rubbing

*Some may remember when Lady Diana Spencer learned this the hard way.

  1. I'm happy to see you are posting again, Nancy. :)

I agree with this post, but I might add that these days, you need to mention underwear as well; because plenty of people don't wear them at all.

  2. Hello, Nancy! I came across your blog about eight months ago and have used it as a study guide in my personal journey toward being a lady. I'm so thrilled you have begun to post again! It comes at a time I am particularly discouraged with both the decay of society around us and myself in trying to navigate through it all. This is like a beacon of light and I am grateful for this project you are sharing.

    1. It's really lovely to hear from you, Jennifer! The world can be disheartening, but I so glad you've found encouragement here. Remember it's the direction you're heading that's important. Each little step in that direction is progress!

  3. Dear Nancy,
It was such a lovely surprise to get the email notification of your new posts! They are a welcome and refreshing spot in my day.

I am in complete agreement with the need for a slip and stockings. Many women, even professional women, no longer wear them in my city. It's sad, because the lack spoils an otherwise polished appearance. And middle-aged legs . . . well, they just aren't as attractive as the owners seem to believe. Wearing stockings is akin to the old practice of shooting aging movie stars through gauze. Sometimes the skin needs some help to appear soft and youthful. A lady certainly does herself a favor by wearing silky stockings, (even though no longer made of silk).

    1. How interesting! This is the first I've heard of filming through gauze - what a good analogy to stockings on aging legs. ;) It's always a pleasure to hear from you, Arabella.

  4. Dear Nancy
I am so happy you are posting again. During the past year I went back and re-read all your older posts. I agree with you about the stockings. I did not wear them in the summer for several years but began again last year. I was surprised how much better I felt wearing them - more like a lady. I felt like I was fully dressed. It is funny you mention the slips. I also started wearing them last summer as I had a dress that you see through the skirt area when it was sunny. I was surprised how much of a change it made in how I felt. Your posts are so inspiring!

  5. Hello Nancy,
I found your blog through Lady Lydia's Home Living, and have been enjoying it for some time. I, too, am happy to see you posting again!
A question: do you need to wear a slip when a skirt already contains a substantial lining? (The less bulk I have around my middle, the better!)
    Thank you!

    1. Homeliving is my favorite blog, Jo!

A substantial lining is like a built in slip, so a skirt with one is sufficient in itself. Thank you for writing!

  6. So glad to see you posting and I fully agree with the stockings and slip. I have always worn at least a half slip with my skirts, but about three years ago, I begin to wear full body slips and they do help with the appearance of your clothing and I don't have to worry about my slip falling or showing. Stockings are also a daily habit I have, even if I am just at home. I tried going the other day without stockings as it was warm out and I felt like I was not completely dressed. Thank you for a lovely post.

  7. Would never work here. In the high 90s daily so it's all thin beach dresses over bikinis. No slips, and definitely no stockings. That advice does not work everywhere in the world, or for every activity.

    1. I'm afraid you've missed the point of this blog, which is to discover the principles that have traditionally guided the dress and behavior which served to distinguish a woman as a lady in past generations.

A lady has always worn proper undergarments to ensure modesty, even in 90 degree weather. Propriety trumps smaller concerns of personal comfort in a lady's code.

  8. Nancy, I appreciated this post very much. Like most women during the time I was growing up, I wore stockings. In the past years, I've worn tights frequently, but would like to return to stockings. Since I don't live close to department stores, can you suggest an online source for good-quality stockings? The stockings I currently have are from my local drugstore, and the color and fit leave much to be desired! I appreciate any advice you can offer. Your blog is a breath of fresh air.

  9. Hello Nancy,
I find this blog to be wonderful, and this post a lovely reminder, as the summer is right around the corner.
Does a lady wear open-toe high-heeled sandals (if she wears them at all), and pantyhose?
